Mayor Quits Chamber

By Morris Workman 03-12-2010

Mesquite mayor Susan Holecheck, shown earlier this year at a Mesquite City Council meeting, has resigned from her honorary position on the board of the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce.

Mesquite mayor Susan Holecheck, shown earlier
this year at a Mesquite City Council meeting,
has resigned from her honorary position on the
board of the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce.

Mayor Susan Holecheck has resigned from the board of the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce.
The resignation was submitted on Friday, March 5, prior to a meeting of the Chamber board scheduled for Monday.
The mayor has previously come under fire for her hands-on involvement on the Chamber board, particularly last fall during the tumultuous period after the departure of Chamber Executive Director Katherine Cole.
In her resignation letter, the mayor mentioned the problems endured at the Chamber over the last 24 months of her three years on the board.
"While the first year seemed to be clear sailing and not problematic, I have found the last two years to be full of controversy - probably the natural result of change."
Holecheck's letter also hinted that her involvement with the Chamber board may have been a factor in some of those controversies, writing "if my presence on the Board is creating conflict then I would prefer to decline the honorary position." [Read full story]

Curtain Goes Up On Driving Miss Daisy Tonight

03-12-2010

While community theater often offers a chance for lesser-known plays to get exposure during their season, the Virgin Valley Theatre Group is known for offering both ends of the spectrum.
Tonight, the VVTG will debut "Driving Miss Daisy," a stage play by Alfred Uhry which is known around the world thanks to the 1989 hit movie which starred Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman.
Tonight's opening will star local performing veteran Laura Branchini in the title role of Miss Daisy, an elderly southern widow.
Branchini is known in Mesquite for her brilliant portrayal of Grand Ole Opry icon Minnie Pearl in several shows, including the local musical production of Road House in 2007. [Read full story]

location for a new skating rink. On Tuesday,

Conditional Use Permit to allow the rink to go

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
That old children's homily sums up the never-say-die approach of A Pirate's Paradise, the company owned by Tim and Claudia Andrus which continues to work toward bringing an indoor skating rink to the people of Mesquite.
On Tuesday, the company received approval by the Mesquite City Council for a Conditional Use Permit which will allow them to open a skating rink in the Cimarron Business Park.
It's the third time the city has voted on the skating rink, albeit at three different locations.
Throw in tentative plans to open the rink at two different sites in Arizona, and the project has logged a lot of miles.
Originally, the company attempted to purchase city-owned land in the Mesquite Technology and Commerce Center back in 2008. [Read full story]

Revelers Ready For St. Pat's Walk

By Morris Workman 03-11-2010

Partiers head out of the 19th Hole to start the 2009 St. Patrick's Day Walk. The annual event is set for March 17, again beginning at the 19th Hole, then stopping at various bars along the way to the final destination at the Stateline Casino.

Different communities have their own unique ways of celebrating St. Patrick's Day.
In Savannah, Georgia, the river is turned green as part of the second largest St. Patrick's celebration in the country.
Ditto for the river in Chicago.
On the south side of Boston, a raucous parade winds through the city.
The same will happen in New York City and dozens of other communities across the country.
In Mesquite, the only way the Virgin River will be turning green is if there's an unexpected algae bloom.
Also, the parade which works its way down Sanhill Blvd. and onto Mesquite Blvd. won't involve marching bands or decorated floats.
But it will be a party atmosphere just the same, as the community celebrates the wearin' o' the green with the annual St. Patrick's Day Walk. [Read full story]

Gold Butte Debate Draws Crowd At City Council

By Morris Workman 03-10-2010

Moapa Valley Town Advisory Board member Guy Doty requests that the Mesquite City Council rescind its resolution supporting the designation of Gold Butte as a National Conservation Area during Tuesday's city council meeting.

Moapa Valley Town Advisory Board member Guy
Doty requests that the Mesquite City Council
rescind its resolution supporting the
designation of Gold Butte as a National
Conservation Area during Tuesday's city council
meeting.

Tuesday's Mesquite City Council meeting drew a sizeable and vocal crowd, as people on both sides of the Gold Butte controversy took turns expressing their positions on the issue.
The debate centered around a previous decision by the council to approve a resolution supporting the federal proposal to declare the 350,000 acre parcel of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land as a National Conservation Area (NCA).
According to the proponents of the designation, including the local Friends of Gold Butte organization, the NCA would protect the area, including cultural and historic sites, as well as the endangered desert tortoise.
Those opposing the proposal claim the designation would result in more closed trails, and denial of access to the area by ATV's and other motorized vehicles.
According to Mesquite Mayor Susan Holecheck, the city originally supported the NCA as a means of ensuring the city would have a say with the feds once the NCA legislation was introduced in Congress. [Read full story]

Tea Party Rejects Recall Idea

03-09-2010

At their meeting on March 3, the TEA Party of Mesquite rejected the idea of calling for recall of Mayor Susan Holecheck, or any members of the Mesquite City Council.
The group also confirmed that there had been no previous discussion of a recall prior to the Feb. 23 city council meeting in which then-member Don Muse wore a shirt which said "Recall" and raised the idea during his remarks to the council.
Muse's remarks came during impassioned statements on an agenda item which could have potentially changed the date of Mesquite's city elections, and extended the terms of the mayor and all five council members by 17 months.
The council voted 5-0 to put the measure before the voters in a referendum tentatively scheduled for June of 2011. [Read full story]

Small Agenda On Tap For Council

By Morris Workman 03-09-2010

Following last month's controversial meeting, the Mesquite City Council will get a breather to start the month of March.
The agenda for today's semi-monthly meeting includes just 11 items.
The most eye-catching item on the agenda is a request for a Conditional Use Permit for the itinerant roller skating rink proposed by A Pirate's Paradise.
In 2008, the company planned to purchase some city-owned land in west Mesquite for the rink, along with a water park, paintball park, batting cages, and other amenities.
However, the deal fell through, and the company looked at two different locations just across the border in Arizona. [Read full story]
